Flan does not particularly stand out on a dinner table, nor does it get an award for the best looking desert. It’s just a pale yellow and brown custard. However, it disappears first with people wanting more of it. Imagine what if ,along with tasting delicious, also looked appealing. It’s like having an alter ego of flan. Whats Clark Kent to Superman, Flan is to Panna Cotta.
Panna Cotta is an Italian dessert which mostly contains Gelatin and is made from heavy cream with milk. But making this vegan panna cotta without gelatin and milk is way easier than you think. In this recipe, instead of gelatin we use agar agar which is derivative of plant and instead of heavy cream I have used Coconut Milk.
If you are not vegan and wanna try with whole milk then just replace the coconut milk with heavy cream and milk. I have tried making with different combinations as well. Using equal quantity of coconut milk and milk or using just heavy cream or just milk, combination of heavy milk and milk, doesn’t matter what you use , there is no compromise to the taste.
I have tried many flavors of Panna cotta and by far my favorite is blueberry and strawberry flavors. This is one dessert that can be mould very easily. I love assembling panna cotta in a shot glass for a quick dessert treat , also it’s a great idea for the any party or gathering. So here I am presenting with my 2 favorite flavors.
- Strawberry Panna Cotta in a Glass and Short Glass
- Blueberry Panna Cotta moulded and served with Blueberry topping
Meet the ingredients and steps
- Ingredients for Panna Cotta
- Ingredients for Strawberry Topping
- Ingredients for Blueberry Topping
- Boil coconut milk and sugar, add agar agar and boil for 3 minutes
- turn off the gas and add vanilla essence, Transfer to desired mould or glass and let it sit in fridge for about 30 minutes
- Make the strawberry topping by adding water, berries and sugar
- Boil it until the berries are broken down. May take 5-6 minutes. Off goes the gas and add lemon juice
- Make the blueberry topping the same way as strawberry topping
Isn’t making this very easy? Once the Panna cotta is set in the fridge, remove it and add the desired topping to the glasses. If using a mould, transfer it to a plate and add the the topping.

Notes
- Options for other flavors of Pan cotta- any berries can be used.
- Chocolate pannacota- Incorporate the chocolate into the panna cotta mix itself instead of vanilla essence and add desired toppings
- If you are not vegan , you can make this by using equal quantity of heavy cream and milk.
- I have tried making this with equal quantity of coconut milk and milk. It still tastes great with mild coconut flavor.
